Challenge

Vojvodina is a province of roughly 2 million inhabitants located in northern Serbia, with agricultural land making up almost 85% of its territory. A joint venture between a private investor and the Serbian government selected TAHAL to design and implement an integrated agricultural development project that would address statutory issues, utilize modern technologies and methodologies, and prove economically profitable.

Solution

The project involves crop production on an area of 10,500 ha, of which 6,500 ha is planned to be under irrigation by the end of 2017. TAHAL has undertaken the project on a turnkey basis, providing all professional agronomic and engineering services required. TAHAL has conducted all design services in-house, and has established a 100%-owned local subsidiary to carry out procurement, implementation and construction services.

TAHAL has provided the following services during the course of the project:

  • Design and installation of irrigation and fertigation systems on 6,500 ha
  • Erection of 6 pumping stations on canals and water sources, with a total capacity of over 13 thousand m3/hour
  • Procurement of improved cost-saving agricultural machinery
  • Introduction of advanced agro-technologies
  • Implementation of GPS and GIS systems for obtaining accurate data and assisting in decision making (precision agriculture)
  • Installation of 96 irrigation machines, including 63 center pivots, 30 ditch-fed linear move machines, and 3 hose-fed linear move machines
  • Design and erection of two logistics centers, each including two silo systems for storing grain (with a total capacity of 35,000 m3), drying and aeration systems, garages and offices
  • Training of local personnel in areas such as fertilization, irrigation and operation and maintenance of new machinery, enabling independent operations within three years
  • Submission of feasibility studies and business plans for procurement of agro-industrial plants for processing of value-added products
